Solon of Athens, the famous Athenian reformer, about whom, as usual, little certain is known and about whom, just as usually, elaborate romances are therefore concocted. See Smith's biography for a not very restrained account.

Solon wrote elegiacs and iambics, which contain the usual Epic and Ionic touches expected of these genres. His poems, like those of Theognis, doubtless contain many later interpolations. Any pithy or gnomic verses had a habit of ending up attributed to one or even both of these two poets.
